Abstract

Through literature review, this article aimed to discuss the consequences arising from urbanization in Brazil as a process that contributes to the expansion of inequalities and the vulnerability of certain social groups. Based on the conclusions shown in the article “Socio environmental vulnerability to human leptospirosis in the metropolitan urban area of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil: a methodological proposal based on multi-criteria analysis and map algebra”, written by Professor Elaiz Aparecida Mensch Buffon, it is intended to present the urbanization as a phenomenon that frequently presents flaws, sustained primarily by capitalism through the fallacy of the promise of a more dignified life through migration to urban centers and alteration of the landscape to correspond to the expectations of what is conceived as “development”. To do so, it was opportune to dialogue with the work “Development as Freedom” by Amartya Sen in particular, as well as “A Urbanização Brasileira” by Milton Santos and “Risikogesellschaft” by Ulrich Beck.
