THE SOCIAL SECURITY AND PROTECTION OF RURAL WORKERS IN THE FAMILY ECONOMY SYSTEM: AN ANALYSIS FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT uma análise voltada para o desenvolvimento rural sustentável

Abstract

This article aims to contextualize the history of social security, highlighting the impacts and legislative changes that contributed to the current scenario of workers' social rights, especially rural workers. We need to understand the historical context that culminated in the set of laws and decrees that form the current social security system. Rural workers can be classified into four categories: rural employees under the CLT (Regulatory Labor Law), individual rural contributors, casual rural workers, and special rural insured persons. Special rural insured persons receive special protection under the legal system and are considered mandatory members of the RGPS (Governmental Social Security System), due to the importance of family farming and rural activity as their source of livelihood. They are only required to pay a tax on their production. With rural workers' retirement, they are provided with support in old age, enabling their descendants to continue their rural activities, thus enabling the institution of rural succession. These rural workers must be included in the context of sustainable rural development, whereby family farming activities must be developed within a socioeconomic and environmental context. This research was conducted through a review of an extensive bibliography, particularly published scientific articles, monographs, dissertations and theses, legal manuals, and informational materials relevant to this article.
